ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Mike Lawrence's achievements at bridge continue to stagger the imagination. Although only in his early forties, he has amassed nearly fifteen thousand master points, which ranks him in the top twenty on the all-time ACBL list. His impressive list of victories at North America Bridge Championships includes the Vanderbilt, which he has won five times, theReisinger in which he has four victories, the Men's teams which he has won twice, and the Spingold. Second place finishes include the Reisinger, the Vanderbilt, the Spingold three times, and four tmes in the Blue Ribbon pairs. Add to these two World Championships (Stockholm 1970 and Taiwan 1971), two second places (Miami 1972 and Garuja, Brazil 1973), and a third place (Miami 1986), well over 100 Regional Championship wins, and many victories in lesser events.
Mike has become quite a prolific bridge writer. His first bridge book, How to Read Your Opponents' Cards was named bridge book of the year in 1973 by Alfred Sheinwold. In 1976 Mike wrote Judgment at Bridge for which Sheinwold graciously created an introduction. Then followed The Complete Book on Overcalls in Contract Bridge, and similarly titled works on the topic of Balancing and Hand Evaluation, all of which Sheinwold has been pleased to introduce; Overcalls was Mike's second "bridge book of the year", taking Sheinwold's award for 1980. A digression from his role as an author-teacher is True Bridge Humor, and his book Play a Swiss Team of Four with Mike Lawrence has been described by many readers as equivalent to a novel, building suspense in such fashion that the reader couldn't put it down until it had been fnished. Other recent efforts include Dynamic Defense, Play Bridge With Mike Lawrence, False Cards, Card Combinations, and pamphlets covering major suit raises, Jacoby Transfers, and Lebensohl.
Two decades ago Mike ventured to write in another of his fields of expertise; Winning Backgammon was published by pinnacle in 1975. His most recent non-bridge creation is Scrabble, which was published by Bantam in 1987.
In addition to enjoying his writing, Mike is creative in other fields as well. His artistic bent has led him to the creation of ink abstracts, decoration of bottles in leather, and work in stained glass. He is an avid collector of old comic books which he buys, sells and trades.
Mike's major efforts as a teacher has produced a series of week-long classes. He has traveled to several cities, set up residence for a week, and taught students of all experience levels. Comments from his students indicate that he is a most thorough and thoughtful instructor who is able to express himself logically, humorously, and in easily understandable terms.
